Ahead of the 1992/93 season, UEFA decided to include the Israeli national team and Israeli clubs in the European competition circuit. The following season, Maccabi Haifa joined as the cup holder, and in their very first season, they showed what the future would hold. The Greens became a household name in Europe, being the first to reach the later stages of the European Cup (round of 16 and quarter-finals) and the first to reach the group stage of the Champions League.
